Spiritualism is a social and religious movement that became very popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

It is based on the idea that a person's awareness continues even after they die. Followers believe these spirits live in a spirit world that is constantly changing. This afterlife is not a static or still place for them. Instead, spirits continue to interact and evolve as they grow. Many people believe that spirits are more advanced than humans. Because they are more advanced, spirits can offer advice on moral issues. They may also help the living understand the nature of God.

To connect with this other world, many people use a medium. A medium is a person who is believed to have a gift for communicating with spirits. While some believe people are born with this gift, others think anyone can learn through study.

One common way to communicate is through a séance. This is a formal meeting where a medium tries to receive information about the afterlife. Some people even follow "spirit guides." These are specific spirits that a person relies on for guidance in their daily life. These guides can help with both worldly tasks and spiritual growth. This belief system allows people to feel a direct connection to the unseen world.

The roots of the movement can be found in the 1840s. It first appeared in the "Burned-over District" of upstate New York. This area was full of different religious ideas at that time.

Some thinkers, like Emanuel Swedenborg, helped shape these early ideas. Swedenborg was a scientist and inventor who described a spirit world with many different levels. He believed spirits acted as messengers between God and humans. Another man named Franz Mesmer used techniques that later became known as hypnotism. These methods helped people enter trances to report contact with supernatural beings. Together, these ideas helped create the foundation for what would become spiritualism.

A very famous moment happened on March 31, 1848, in Hydesville, New York.

Two sisters named Kate and Margaret Fox reported hearing spirit messages. The spirits communicated using loud rapping noises that people could hear. This made the Fox sisters famous celebrity mediums. However, the movement faced hard times later on. In 1888, the sisters admitted the noises were actually a hoax. This led to many accusations of fraud by other mediums. Because of these doubts, formal spiritualist organizations began to form to create more structure. They created documents like the "Declaration of Principles" to define their beliefs.

Spiritualism was also closely linked to many social reform movements. Many followers were people who wanted to change the world for the better. They supported the abolition of slavery and the cause of women's suffrage.

For example, the lecturer Achsa W. Sprague was an advocate for women's rights. Another medium, Paschal Beverly Randolph, also helped the abolitionist movement. Some spiritualists even worked to improve conditions for Native Americans. This movement reached its largest following between the 1840s and the 1920s. Today, the tradition continues through various spiritualist churches in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
