Bess Houdini was a talented stage assistant and performer.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1876. Her parents were German immigrants named Gebhard and Balbina Rahner. Bess worked at Coney Island in a dance act called The Floral Sisters. This is where she first met the family of Harry Houdini. She fell in love with Harry and they married in 1894. They worked together as a team for many years. They performed a special trick called Metamorphosis. Bess also made the costumes for their big shows. She even took care of their many pets.

After Harry died in 1926, Bess lived a very busy life. She opened a tea house in New York City. She also performed a vaudeville act with a man in ice. Bess wanted to see if she could contact Harry. She used séances, which are meetings to talk to spirits. She used a secret code to make sure no one was tricking her. The code used words like "Rosabelle" and "tell." These words were part of a spelling system they once used. The words spelled out the word "BELIEVE."

Bess worked hard to keep Harry's memory alive for many years. In the 1930s, she moved to Hollywood, California. She worked with a partner named Edward Saint. On Halloween in 1936, they held a "Final Houdini Séance." This took place on the roof of the Knickerbocker Hotel. At the end, she put out a candle. That candle was said to have burned for ten years. Bess asked a writer named Walter B. Gibson to keep a yearly tribute going. This tradition was later passed to Dorothy Dietrich.

Bess Houdini died in 1943 while traveling on a train. She was 67 years old at the time. She was traveling from Los Angeles toward New York City. She died from a heart attack in Needles, California. Her family did not bury her with Harry in Queens. Harry was Jewish and Bess was raised Roman Catholic. Because of this, she is buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Hawthorne, New York.

Many artists today still tell the story of Bess Houdini. She appeared as herself in a 1938 film called Religious Racketeers. Many other actors have played her in movies and on stage. For example, Janet Leigh played her in 1953. The singer Kate Bush wrote a song called "Houdini" about her. The band My Chemical Romance also used her story for inspiration. Even musical albums like d'Illusion tell of her life. Her story continues to inspire people through music and film.
