They turned a small touring show into a huge circus. This circus became one of the largest in the United States. People loved the excitement they brought to many towns. The brothers worked hard to make their shows special. Their success changed how people saw circus shows. They became very well known during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Alfred was a talented juggler. John was a singer and a professional clown. Al's wife, Lou, did many different tasks. She made the wardrobe for the performers. She also worked as a horse performer and a snake charmer. Some brothers, like Charles and John, were the business brains. They helped make big decisions for the whole company.

The family history began in the Midwest. Four brothers were born in McGregor, Iowa. They lived there for twelve years starting in 1860. Later, the family moved to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. They finally settled in Baraboo, Wisconsin, in 1875. Their parents came from Germany and France. Their father, Heinrich, was a harness maker. This family background helped them grow into a strong business.

There were seven Ringling brothers in total. Alfred, Charles, John, Al, and Otto were the main leaders. In 1919, they did something very big. They merged their show with the Barnum and Bailey troupe. This created the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. This famous circus operated for a very long time. It only took a break from 2017 to 2022. This shows how much people valued their shows.

Even today, people remember the names of these siblings. The brothers even moved their circus to Sarasota, Florida. This was a choice made by John and Charles. One brother, Alfred, even helped create a lake in New Jersey. This lake is now called Lake Swannanoa. His son used the land for a different circus too. The Ringling name is still linked to great shows. Their story is a big part of circus history.
