These performers are often called escape artists. They show how to get free from many things. They might escape from handcuffs or heavy chains. Some artists get out of cages or steel boxes. They can even escape from water tanks or burning buildings.

In the past, people used these skills in secret. They used them to make magic tricks look real. Later, it became a show all on its own. Harry Houdini was a very famous escape artist. He built a big career on his skill. He could escape from beer barrels and mail bags. He also used locks and special tools to get free. Some of his acts used clever props. One was called the Chinese Water Torture Cell.

Today, people still perform these amazing stunts. Some artists even try to break world records. In 2012, Lucas Wilson escaped a straitjacket very fast. A straitjacket is a tight cloth garment. He escaped in just 8.4 seconds while hanging upside down. Many people still call great artists "modern-day Houdinis."
