He is credited with transitioning magic from street performances into grand theaters. This shift allowed magic to become a major form of public entertainment. Anderson believed it was the duty of all magicians to provide delight. He practiced expert showmanship to captivate his audiences. He even removed tricks from his shows if they were not received with enthusiasm. This commitment to quality helped him achieve high levels of world renown.

Anderson's performances relied on sophisticated illusions and clever presentation. He is famously credited as the first magician to pull a rabbit out of a top hat. While the trick existed in other forms, he was the first to perform it on a stage. He also made the bullet catch illusion widely popular. Although he did not invent the bullet catch, his version was copied by many rivals. In Boston, he performed an illusion involving the dispensing of alcoholic beverages. This specific act led to a legal controversy regarding temperance movements in that city.

His career involved many different stages and roles. He began as a member of a traveling dramatic company in 1830. By age seventeen, he was performing magic. He later became a theater owner, opening the New Strand Theatre in London in 1840. He also completed the City Theatre in Glasgow in 1845. Later in life, he transitioned into a role as a critic of spiritualism. He used his magic skills to expose the fraudulent tricks used by mediums. He even used his daughters to duplicate spiritualist effects to show how they worked.

Anderson's life was marked by significant global travel. After performing at Lord Panmure's castle in 1837, he toured for three years. In 1846, he launched a show at London's Covent Garden Theatre. He toured Europe, visiting Hamburg, Stockholm, and St. Petersburg. In Russia, he met Czar Nicholas I, who arranged a command performance for him. In 1849, he performed for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His travels also took him to America, Canada, Australia, and Hawaii in 1850.

Despite his success, Anderson faced many financial hardships. In 1845, his City Theatre in Glasgow was completed, but he faced losses elsewhere. In 1856, a fire destroyed the Covent Garden Theatre.

This disaster destroyed all of his properties and caused his second bankruptcy. He also struggled with debt later in life. He went bankrupt again in 1866. His professional life was also complicated by a bitter feud with his son, John Henry Jr. Their relationship broke after the son began an independent career in 1862.

Competition and imitation were common in the magic industry. Anderson often faced rivals like Robert Houdin. In some cases, magicians used pirated inventions. A mechanic named Le Grand was arrested for selling duplicate illusions belonging to Houdin. These illusions often fell into the hands of competitors like Anderson and Compars Herrmann. While some magicians knew the tricks were stolen, they performed them anyway. Anderson eventually returned to America in 1853 to perform in Boston.

Anderson's influence extended long after his death in 1874. He died at the Fleece Hotel in Darlington.

He was buried in the Kirk of St Nicholas churchyard. The famous magician Harry Houdini was inspired by Anderson's work. Because of this respect, Houdini arranged for the upkeep of Anderson's grave in 1909. This was necessary because the gravesite had fallen into disrepair. Anderson's legacy remains a foundational part of modern stage magic history.
