He likely lived around 300 AD in a place called Panopolis. Today, we know this place as Akhmim in southern Egypt. Zosimos was an alchemist and a Gnostic mystic. Alchemy is the study of how things change and grow. He defined it as studying how things move, grow, and bond. He also looked at how to draw spirits from bodies. To him, alchemy was about more than just physical things. It was a way to understand the world and the soul.

His way of working involved many steps and deep symbols. He believed that changing metals like lead into gold was important. However, this was not just about the metal itself. He thought these changes mirrored a way to clean the inner self. He used the idea of a mixing bowl to show this. He also compared alchemical tools to a font used for baptism. He thought the vapors of mercury and sulphur worked like purifying water. This process helped a person reach a higher spiritual state. He used these steps to show how a mind can transform.

Zosimos wrote the oldest known books on the subject of alchemy.

He called his writings "Cheirokmeta," which means "things made by hand." One famous book is called the "Book of Pictures." This book uses thirteen chapters to teach lessons. Each chapter starts with a special image for the reader to study. He wrote these books as a dialogue with a student. Her name was Theosebeia, and they talked back and forth. Sometimes they argued about the meanings of his difficult words. These books helped explain how to understand complex ideas through symbols.

Many different people helped keep his ideas alive through history. His Greek writings were translated into Syriac and Arabic languages. A historian named Fuat Sezgin found fifteen manuscripts in many libraries. These libraries were in places like Cairo, Istanbul, and Dublin. Another scholar named Michèle Mertens studied these many Arabic texts. She found that the Arabic tradition of his work was very rich. Some of his books were even found in a Persian book. These discoveries help us learn how his ideas traveled far away. We can still see his influence in many old manuscripts today.

Zosimos' work acts like a bridge between different cultures and times. His ideas connected the thoughts of ancient Egypt to later Europe. His use of images was similar to old Egyptian books. For example, his symbols relate to motifs found in the Amduat. These ideas helped shape how later alchemists thought about their work. Even the way they viewed the relationship between men and women came from him. His teachings about the inner fire and water were very powerful. He showed how science and spirit could be studied together. This makes his work a vital part of our history.
