These writings are very important to history. They help us understand how people thought about religion long ago. Most of the texts are called Gnostic treatises. Gnosticism is a set of religious ideas. The collection also includes works from the Corpus Hermeticum. One part of the collection even contains a piece of Plato's Republic. These books were found in Egypt near a town called Nag Hammadi. They are a huge treasure for scholars today.

In late 1945, a farmer named Muhammed al-Samman found them. He found a sealed jar buried in the desert. Inside the jar were twelve leather-bound codices made of papyrus. A codex is a type of early book. The books were written in the Coptic language. They contain over 1,000 written pages in total. Some people think the books were hidden to keep them safe from others. Others believe they were buried with a wealthy person as special items.

History tells us many different stories about these books. Some experts believe the books belonged to a nearby monastery. They think the books were hidden after a leader named Saint Athanasius spoke against them in 367 A.D. Other researchers suggest a small group of smart monks used them. These monks might have kept them as part of a larger library. The books themselves were written during the 3rd and 4th centuries. This means they are very, very old. Learning about their past is like solving a giant puzzle.

There are many specific details about the texts.

One of the most famous books is the Gospel of Thomas. It is a collection of sayings from Jesus. This library holds the only complete version of that book. The collection has 52 different writings in it. Some writings are called the Apocryphon of John. Another is the Gospel of Truth. These names help scholars organize all the different ideas found in the jar.

Today, these ancient treasures are kept in a safe place. Most of the books are in the Coptic Museum in Cairo, Egypt. One special book is known as the Jung Codex. It was once owned by a man named Carl Gustav Jung. Scholars from all over the world study these texts now. They use English and German translations to read them. These books connect us to the people who lived many centuries ago. They show us the many ways people have wondered about the world.
