Gnosticism is a name for many different religious and philosophical ideas.

These ideas became well-known by the middle of the second century. Scholars use this term as an umbrella to group various people together. These groups were not all the same. However, they shared a focus on special spiritual knowledge. They called this knowledge "gnosis."

This was not just learning facts from a book. It was a deep and personal way to know a divine being through direct experience.

How did these people see the world? Many Gnostic groups had a specific way of looking at reality. They often saw a difference between two beings. One was a hidden and pure supreme being. The other was a flawed creator called a demiurge. This creator was responsible for making the material world. Many Gnostics believed this physical world was actually evil. They felt that salvation came from gaining direct knowledge of the true divine. This was often found through mystical or secret insights.

The history of these ideas is quite complex. We do not know exactly where Gnosticism began. Some ideas grew among early Christian groups in the Mediterranean. In these traditions, Christ was seen as a divine being. He took a human form to help people recognize their own divine nature. Other groups blended Jewish and Christian ideas together. For example, the Mandaeans focused on the struggle between light and darkness. Other groups, like the Valentinians, combined these ideas with Greek philosophy.

There are many important facts about these different groups. One major movement was Manichaeism, which appeared in the third century. It even rivaled Christianity for a time. For a long time, much of what we knew came from people who disagreed with Gnostics. These early Church leaders often called Gnostic ideas "heresy." In 1945, a huge discovery changed everything. People found the Nag Hammadi library in Egypt.

Gnosticism connects to many things in our world today. Some ancient traditions still carry these ideas. Mandaeism is a religion in the Middle East that follows these paths. Another tradition is Yezidism, which was practiced in northern Mesopotamia. Gnostic ideas also appeared later in medieval Europe with groups like the Cathars. Even some Islamic and Jewish thoughts show these influences. Today, scholars continue to study these texts to learn about the diverse landscape of early belief systems.
