Its followers are known as Mandaeans. The name comes from the Aramaic word manda, which means knowledge. Some people also call them Nasoraeans or Sabians. This group is often described as Gnostic. This means they focus on finding special spiritual knowledge. They believe in a dualistic world. This is a way of seeing the world as having two sides, like light and darkness.

Their beliefs center on one God. They call Him Hayyi Rabbi, which means "The Great Life." God is seen as the creative force of the whole universe. Light is a very important symbol for them. They believe in the power of light and its guardians. These guardians are called uthras, or angels. These beings provide strength and justice to the world.

Mandaeans also value living water, called Yardena. Because of this, they try to live near rivers.

The Mandaeans follow many important prophets. They revere figures like Adam, Abel, Seth, and Noah. They especially look up to John the Baptist. They believe Adam was the founder of their religion. However, they believe John the Baptist was the greatest and final prophet.

They speak an ancient language called Mandaic. This is a type of Eastern Aramaic. Some people once called them "Christians of Saint John." But Mandaeans actually believe Jesus was a false prophet.

History tells us many stories about their origins. One text, the Haran Gawaita, was written between the 4th and 6th centuries. It says the first Mandaeans were disciples of John the Baptist. They reportedly left Jerusalem and moved to Media to avoid persecution. They traveled through places like Haran and the Median hills. Eventually, they settled in southern Mesopotamia.

This area includes parts of modern-day Iraq and Iran. Some scholars think the group might be even older than that.

Today, Mandaeans are a small group of people. There are believed to be between 60,000 and 70,000 Mandaeans worldwide. For a long time, almost all of them lived in Iraq. They lived near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Many have moved to new countries due to wars and violence.
