The Gothic Bible is a very special set of ancient texts. It contains the Christian Bible written in the Gothic language. This language was spoken by Eastern Germanic tribes long ago.

These writings are a huge treasure for history. They help us understand how people lived and spoke in the past. This book is one of the earliest documents in any Germanic language. It is also the only large document we have in an ancient East Germanic language.

How did these words get onto the page? Many people believe a bishop named Wulfila translated them. He lived during the fourth century and was a missionary. He is also believed to have created the Gothic alphabet.

However, modern scholars have a different idea. By looking at the language, they think a team of scholars did the work. They likely worked together to make the translation instead of just one person.

We can trace the history of these people back to the third century. The Goths lived near the Roman Empire borders. They lived in areas that are now Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Romania.

During the fourth century, the Goths became Christians. The translation work likely happened in Nicopolis ad Istrum. This place is in what we call northern Bulgaria today. Later, the Goths moved into parts of the Western Roman Empire. They lived in Italy, southern France, and Spain for two centuries.

We do not have the whole Bible today. We only have small pieces called fragments. Some pieces are found in books called codices. The most famous one is the Codex Argenteus. It is kept in a place called Uppsala.

Other pieces are in the Codex Ambrosianus collection. There is also a piece called the Codex Carolinus. Some parts are even written on thin lead plates. These are called the Fragmenta Pannonica. These plates are only one millimeter thick.

Learning about these fragments helps us connect to the past. It shows us how languages change over many years. The Gothic Bible is like a puzzle for historians. Even small pieces, like the Codex Gissensis, tell a big story. Some pieces, like the Codex Boniensis, even contain sermons. These fragments help us see how people used the Bible in their daily lives. They show us how faith and language grew together in Europe.
