Jabir ibn Hayyan is a name tied to a massive collection of writings. These works are known as the Jabirian corpus. This collection includes about 600 Arabic books. Today, about 215 of those books still exist. They cover many different subjects like stars and plants. They also look at medicine and grammar. Many people studied these books to learn about the world.

His writings show early ways of doing science. He created the oldest known way to group chemical substances. He also wrote instructions to make a new substance called sal ammoniac. This is a type of ammonium chloride. He showed how to make it from organic things like plants, hair, and blood. He also used a theory about metals. This theory said metals were made of sulfur and mercury. This idea stayed popular until the 18th century.

One big idea in his books is the science of the balance. This is called ʿilm al-mīzān in Arabic. He wanted to use math to understand everything. He believed all things could be measured with numbers. This helped people look at the world through proportions. He wanted to reduce all things to a system of measures. This was a very organized way to think about nature.

Scholars have many questions about who Jabir really was. Some believe he lived in the 8th century. They say he was a student of the leader Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq. However, no history books mention him before the year 900. Modern scholars often think Jabir was a pseudonym. A pseudonym is a fake name used by a group. They think a group of alchemists used his name to write their books.

We can find clues about his life in his own books. Some say he was from Khurasan in eastern Iran. Others say he lived most of his life in Kufa, which is in Iraq. He might have been Persian or Arab. Some stories even link him to the famous Abbasid caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd. These stories make him seem like a very important figure. Even if he was a fake name, his books changed science forever.
