He lived from 1566 to 1636 and was born in Poland. He worked as a philosopher, a physician, and an alchemist. Alchemy is an old way of studying how to change materials. Sendivogius was a pioneer in the field of chemistry. He found new ways to make metals and various acids. His work helped people understand the building blocks of nature.

One of his biggest discoveries involved the very air we breathe. He realized that air is not just one single thing. He found a special substance inside it that helps life exist. He called this "food of life." This substance is what we now call oxygen. He saw this gas when he heated a substance called nitre. This was a huge discovery for science. He found this 170 years before other scientists did. His ideas about this "central nitre" were very important to him.

Sendivogius spent much of his life traveling to learn. His father sent him to the University of Kraków to study. He also visited many other universities in Europe. He studied in places like Vienna, Leipzig, and Cambridge.

During his travels, he met many famous people. He knew John Dee and Edward Kelley. These connections helped him share his ideas with the world. His travels made him a very well-known man in science.

He worked for many important leaders during his life. In the 1590s, he worked in Prague for Emperor Rudolf II. Later, he went to the court of King Sigismund III in Poland. The king even liked alchemy and did experiments with him.

Sendivogius also helped design metal mines and foundries. These are places where metal is dug up and melted. He was even a diplomat for a time. However, a big war called the Thirty Years' War changed things. This war made it hard for him to find money for science.

Sendivogius wrote many books to share his many ideas. His most famous book was called "New Chemical Light." It was published in 1604 and was very popular. Many smart people, including Isaac Newton, read his work. His books were translated into different languages many times. Even today, he appears in stories and art. A famous painter named Jan Matejko painted him. He even appears as a character in some modern books and shows.
