Otto von Guericke was a brilliant man from Germany.

He was a scientist, an inventor, and a mathematician. He also served as a powerful leader for his home city of Magdeburg. His life was filled with both great discovery and great hardship. During the Thirty Years' War, his city was attacked and destroyed.

Many buildings burned down, and most of the people died. Otto helped rebuild his city after the war ended. He even became the city's chief magistrate for forty years.

Otto was very curious about the empty parts of space. He wanted to see if a vacuum could exist on Earth. A vacuum is a space that has no air in it. At first, he tried to make one using water. He used a pump to pull water out of wooden barrels. However, the wood had tiny holes that let air leak back in.

In 1647, he decided to pump air out of containers instead. This led him to invent a special air pump.

One of his most famous tests used two metal hemispheres. These are two halves of a sphere joined together.

Otto pumped the air out from between the two metal halves. He wanted to show how much air pressure pushes on things. To prove his point, he attached teams of horses to the sides. The horses pulled with all their might, but they could not separate the halves. This amazing demonstration showed that the air outside was pushing the metal parts together.

Otto used his science to help his political career. He traveled to many royal courts to meet kings and emperors.

He used his inventions to impress these powerful leaders. In 1654, he showed his vacuum pump to leaders in Regensburg. In 1663, he demonstrated his work for the King of Prussia. The king was so impressed that he gave Otto a pension for life. His scientific work was eventually published in books by him and Friar Gaspar Schott.

His discoveries helped change how we understand the physical world. His work on the vacuum helped start the Scientific Revolution. He also studied how things can push each other away without touching. This included early work on what we now call electrostatic repulsion.

Even though he lived a long time ago, his ideas were very modern. Today, a university in Magdeburg is named in his honor. His life shows how science and leadership can work together.
