Vacuum pump

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A vacuum pump is a special device used to remove gas particles from a sealed space. When the pump pulls the gas out, it leaves behind a partial vacuum. This means the space has much less air than the world around us.

These tools are very important for many different jobs. They help scientists study how things work in empty spaces. Without them, we could not do much high-level science.

There are three main ways these pumps work. The first way is called positive displacement. These pumps expand a small space to let gas in, then seal it and squeeze it out.

The second way is momentum transfer. These pumps use fast-spinning blades or jets of fluid to knock gas molecules out of a chamber.

The third way is entrapment. These pumps catch gas particles and hold them in a solid state.

People have been studying pumps for a very long time. In the 13th century, an engineer named Al-Jazari described suction pumps used for water. Much later, in 1650, Otto von Guericke invented the first true vacuum pump. He performed a famous experiment with two metal hemispheres.

He showed that two teams of horses could not pull the halves apart once the air was gone. This proved how much air pressure can hold things together.

Many famous scientists helped improve these tools over the years. Robert Boyle and Robert Hooke worked together on an air pump. In 1855, Heinrich Geissler made a mercury pump that reached a very low pressure.

This discovery helped people see new electrical properties. Later, in the 20th century, many new types were made. These included the diffusion pump and the turbomolecular pump.

Vacuum pumps are used in many places today. For example, some pumps are used in making computer chips. Other pumps, like the Roots blower, are used for high pumping speeds.

You might also think of a simple manual water pump. It uses a vacuum to pull water up from a deep well. Even though it is simple, it uses the same basic ideas as huge industrial machines. All these different tools help us control the air around us.
