People have used pumps for a long time. Long ago, people used suction pumps to move water. In 1650, Otto von Guericke made the first vacuum pump. He showed that air can hold things together. He used two metal halves for an experiment. Two teams of horses could not pull them apart!

Today, we use three main ways to make a vacuum. The first way is called positive displacement. These pumps use parts to trap gas. Then they push the gas out.

The second way is momentum transfer. These pumps use fast fans or jets. They knock gas molecules out of the space.

The third way is entrapment. These pumps catch gases in a solid state. Some use very cold temperatures to do this. This is called a cryopump. These tools help us do many big jobs.
