Hydraulic ram

A hydraulic ram is a special water pump. It uses the power of flowing water to work. It does not need electricity or a plug. This makes it great for remote places.

The pump works in a set of steps. First, water flows into a pipe. It picks up speed as it moves. This moving water hits a waste valve. The valve closes quickly. This creates a water hammer. A water hammer is a sudden burst of pressure.

This pressure pushes some water through a delivery valve. The water can now go up a hill. It moves to a place much higher than where it started. Most of the water is spilled out through the waste valve. Even so, the pump stays busy.

After the pressure drops, the waste valve opens again. This lets more water flow in. The pump then starts the cycle over. It can thump many times every minute. Some pumps use a pressure vessel. This is a tank with air inside. The air helps the pump work better and last longer.
