A hydraulic motor is a machine that uses liquid to spin.

It takes the pressure from a liquid, like oil, and turns it into a spinning motion. This is called torque.

There are many ways to make a motor spin. A gear motor uses two gears. High-pressure oil flows between the teeth of the gears to make them turn.

Gear motors are very tough. They often wear down slowly instead of breaking all at once.

A vane motor uses a rotor with small blades called vanes. The liquid pushes these vanes to make the rotor spin. Other motors use pistons, which are parts that move back and forth. Some pistons push inward toward a center rod. Other pistons push outward against a ring.

These motors are very strong. They help move heavy things in big machines. You can find them in cranes, excavators, and even lawn trimmers. Because the liquid can still push the motor when it is off, many motors need a brake to stay still.
