A hydraulic motor is a clever machine that turns liquid pressure into spinning movement.

This spinning motion is called torque. While a hydraulic cylinder moves in a straight line, the motor rotates.

In modern machines, these motors use special hydraulic fluid in closed loops. They are like the opposite of a hydraulic pump. A pump moves liquid to create pressure. A motor takes that pressure and turns it back into motion.

There are many ways these motors work. A gear motor uses two gears that mesh together. High-pressure oil flows around the edges of the gears to make them turn.

This type is very tough because it wears down slowly instead of breaking suddenly. A vane motor uses a rotor with small blades called vanes. The pressurized fluid pushes these vanes to make the rotor spin.

Another type is the gerotor motor. It uses a rotor with one less tooth than the outer part to create movement.

People have been building these machines for a long time. One of the first rotary motors was made by William Armstrong.

He used them for the Swing Bridge over the River Tyne. These early motors used water to move heavy parts of bridges and docks. Later, in 1886, Arthur Rigg patented an engine that could change its stroke. This helped the motor use less water and save energy. This was a big step forward for engineering.

Different motors are made for different jobs. Axial plunger motors are very common in hydraulic systems. They often need a gearbox because they spin much faster than the machines they drive.

Radial piston motors are also very versatile. Some have pistons that push inward toward a center cam.

Others have pistons that push outward against a ring. These outward-pushing motors can handle huge amounts of power. They can be very large, ranging from 1 to 250 litres per revolution.

You can find hydraulic motors working in many places every day. They power big machines like excavators, cranes, and drilling rigs.

They even help run smaller tools like high-powered lawn trimmers. Because liquid can still push the motor when it is turned off, many machines need a brake. This keeps heavy loads, like a crane's weight, from moving on their own. Without these motors, many of our strongest machines would not be able to work.
