Hydraulic cylinder

A hydraulic cylinder is a machine part that moves in a straight line.

It works like a muscle for a machine. It turns fluid pressure into strong motion.

Inside the cylinder is a long tube called a barrel. A piston sits inside this barrel. The piston is attached to a metal rod.

A pump sends oil into the barrel. This oil is under high pressure. The oil pushes the piston. This makes the rod move out or back in. This set of steps is called linear motion.

There are two main ways to build these parts. One way uses steel rods called tie rods to hold the ends on.

These are common in factories. The other way is a welded body. The ends are welded directly to the tube. These are used on big machines like excavators.

They help lift heavy dirt or move large metal sheets. Some cylinders use oil to push the rod out. Other cylinders use oil to both push and pull. These are called double-acting cylinders.
