A piston is a moving part inside a tube called a cylinder.

It must fit very tightly to work well. To do this, it uses piston rings. These are narrow metal rings that press against the cylinder walls. They keep gas from leaking out.

In a car engine, the piston turns power into motion. Gas expands inside the cylinder. This gas pushes the piston down. The piston is joined to a rod. This rod connects to a part called a crankshaft. The moving piston helps turn that crankshaft.

Different engines use different kinds of pistons. Some are made of light metal called an alloy.

Light parts help racing engines go very fast. Other engines use a long piston called a trunk piston. These help support the parts when they move. Some pistons even have a special hole for oil. This oil helps keep the piston cool. High heat can reach over 450 °C. The cooling oil helps the metal stay safe.
