A reciprocating engine uses heat to create motion.

Most of these engines use a piston. A piston is a part that moves up and down inside a tube called a cylinder.

Inside the cylinder, hot gas expands. This expansion pushes the piston down. This movement is called a stroke. When the piston is at the very bottom, it is at the bottom dead center. When it is at the very top, it is at the top dead center.

To turn this up-and-down motion into a spinning motion, the engine uses a crankshaft. A heavy wheel called a flywheel helps keep the motion smooth. To keep the gas from leaking out, metal rings called piston rings press against the cylinder walls.

Many cars use internal combustion engines. These engines burn fuel inside the cylinder. A common type is the four-stroke engine. It has four steps: intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust.

Some engines are very small, like in a motorcycle. Others are very big. A large ship engine can be five stories high! These huge engines can produce a lot of power.
