A Stirling engine is a machine that turns heat into movement.

It uses a gas, like air, that stays trapped inside. This is called a closed-cycle engine.

Robert Stirling invented this engine in 1816.

How does it work? First, heat from the outside warms the gas. This makes the gas expand. The expanding gas pushes a piston to make work. Next, a part called a displacer moves the gas to a cool spot. This creates a vacuum. That vacuum pulls the piston back.

The engine has a special part called a regenerator. This part acts like a heat store. It holds heat inside the machine to help it work better. Because the gas stays inside, the engine is very quiet. It has no pipes to let gas in or out.

In the past, these engines were used for small jobs. Now, people use them for new things. They can use solar power from the sun.

They can also act as heat pumps. This helps move heat from one place to another.
