An internal combustion engine makes power by burning fuel.

This happens inside the engine itself. This is why we call it "internal" combustion. The engine mixes fuel with air. Then, it burns them in a small space. This creates very hot and strong gas. The gas pushes on parts like a piston.

A piston is a cylinder-shaped part. It slides up and down inside a tube. This push turns into movement. This movement can power cars, boats, or planes.

These engines use many types of fuel. Most use gasoline or diesel. Some use natural gas or ethanol. Even peanut oil can work in some engines.

Some engines use a set of steps called a cycle. A four-stroke engine is a common type. Other engines, like jet engines, use a continuous burn. This keeps the power flowing smoothly. Engines help us move all over the world.
