Nicolaus Otto was a German engineer.

He loved science and technology. He wanted to make better engines.

This was the first company to make engines. His first big success was an atmospheric engine. This engine used gas to move a piston. It was very good at saving gas.

Later, Otto worked on a new way to make power. He made the four-stroke engine in 1876.

This engine uses a set of four steps. First, air and gas enter a chamber. Second, a piston squeezes the mix together. This is called compression. Third, a spark lights the mix to give power. Fourth, the engine lets out the used gas.

This design is called the Otto cycle. It is the basis for many modern engines. His work helped lead to the cars we use today. Otto also invented electric ignition. He won a gold medal in Paris for his work.
