This engine is a compression-ignition engine. This means it uses heat from squeezed air to start the fire. Most engines use a spark plug to start the fire. But a diesel engine works a different way. First, the engine pulls air into a chamber. Then, it squeezes the air very tightly. This squeezing makes the air very hot. Next, the engine sprays tiny drops of diesel fuel into the hot air. The heat makes the fuel catch fire instantly.

Rudolf Diesel was the engineer who invented it. He wanted to make an engine that was very efficient. Efficiency is how well an engine uses its fuel. Diesel engines are very good at this. They use more power from their fuel than most other engines.
