Gas-turbine engine

A gas turbine is a powerful engine.

It uses a set of steps called the Brayton cycle. This cycle works in a continuous flow. First, the engine pulls in fresh air. A part called a compressor squeezes the air tight. This makes the air have high pressure.

Next, the air enters a combustor. This is a place where fuel is sprayed into the air. The fuel catches fire to create a hot flow of gas. This hot gas moves very fast. It hits a turbine, which is a wheel with blades. The gas makes the turbine spin.

This spinning motion creates useful power.

Most of this power goes back to the compressor. This keeps the engine running. The rest of the power does other work. It can push a plane forward with a nozzle. It can also turn a propeller or a fan.

Some engines use a second turbine to make electricity. These engines help move ships, trains, and planes.
