Gas-turbine engine

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A gas-turbine engine is a special kind of motor.

It is a continuous flow engine. This means it works in a steady stream. Unlike some motors that go up and down, this one keeps moving. It uses a set of steps called the Brayton cycle. This cycle turns air and fuel into power. These engines are very important today. They help move huge planes and large ships. They even help make electricity for our homes.

How does the engine actually work?

Brayton cycle
Brayton cycle

It starts when fresh air flows into a compressor. This part squeezes the air to create high pressure. Next, the air enters a combustor. Inside, fuel is sprayed into the air and ignited. This creates a hot, fast flow of gas. This gas hits a turbine, which is a wheel with blades. The gas makes the turbine spin. This spinning motion creates useful power. Most of this power goes to run the compressor. The rest of the energy is used for work.

People have been studying this idea for a long time.

Long ago, a machine called Hero's engine showed how air could move things. In 1791, an Englishman named John Barber patented the first true gas turbine. He wanted to power a horseless carriage. Later, in 1894, Sir Charles Parsons used a steam turbine for a ship. In 1899, Charles Gordon Curtis patented the first gas turbine in the US. These early steps helped lead to the engines we use now.

Many different types of engines exist today.

A turbojet uses a nozzle to create thrust for flight. A turboprop uses an extra turbine to turn a propeller. There is also a turboshaft engine. This type can drive a helicopter rotor or a land vehicle. Some engines are even used in power plants.

Large jet engines might spin at 25,000 rpm. Tiny micro turbines can spin much faster, at 500,000 rpm. This shows how much power they hold.

You can see these engines in many places.

They power fast jets in the sky. They also power large ships on the ocean. Some engines even move trains on land. You might even use electricity made by a gas turbine. It is like a giant, spinning cycle of air and heat. This cycle keeps our modern world moving every day.
