An internal combustion engine is a machine that turns fuel into movement.

This happens because fuel burns inside a small space called a combustion chamber. When the fuel burns, it creates very hot and high-pressure gases. These gases expand and push against parts of the engine to create force. This force can move a piston, a turbine blade, or a rotor. This way of working changes chemical energy into kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion.

This energy is what allows us to drive cars or fly planes.

There are different ways these engines work depending on their design. In a reciprocating engine, parts like pistons move back and forth.

Many of these use a four-stroke cycle to complete their work. Other engines, like the Wankel engine, use a rotor to create motion. Some engines use continuous combustion instead of stopping and starting.

Gas turbines and jet engines are examples of this type. Even rocket engines use this continuous burning principle to fly through space. Each type of engine is built to handle different jobs.

Many clever people helped invent and improve these machines over many years.

In 1807, Nicéphore Niépce and Claude Niépce ran a prototype called the Pyréolophore. This engine used dust explosions to power a boat on a river in France. Later, in 1876, an engineer named Nicolaus Otto designed the Otto engine. This was a very important modern design for piston engines. In 1892, Rudolf Diesel developed the compression ignition engine.

These discoveries changed how the world moves.

Today, we see these engines being used in many different places.

Most cars, motorcycles, and boats use reciprocating piston engines. Large ships and even some locomotives use diesel engines for power. Some engines are even used to drive huge electric generators for the power grid. These engines can run on many types of fuel. Most use gasoline, diesel, or natural gas.

Some can even use renewable fuels like ethanol or biodiesel. Even peanut oil was used by Rudolf Diesel in 1900.

If you look under the hood of a car, you are seeing an engine block.

This block is often made of cast iron or aluminum. It holds the cylinders where the burning happens. Inside the cylinders, pistons slide up and down to capture the force of the gas. To keep the engine from getting too hot, some use water to cool it.

Others use metal fins to let the air cool the engine. This clever design keeps the machine running smoothly and safely.
