A disc brake is a tool used to slow down wheels.

It uses a round part called a disc. This disc spins along with the wheel. A part called a caliper holds two brake pads. When you use the brake, the caliper squeezes the pads against both sides of the disc.

This squeezing creates friction. Friction turns the motion into heat. This heat helps the wheel slow down or stop.

Many discs have special designs to help them work better. Some discs are solid. Others are ventilated, which means they have paths inside to help them cool down. Some have holes or slots cut into them. These holes help water move away so the brakes work well in the rain.

These designs are very helpful for race cars. Some race brakes use two parts. One part is a bell that connects to the wheel. The other part is the disc ring. This helps the brake handle very high heat without warping.
