Most brakes work using friction. Friction is a force that happens when two things rub together. This rubbing turns movement into heat. The heat then goes into the air.

Early bikes used spoon brakes. A metal shoe pressed onto the front tire. These could wear out thin tires quickly. Later, people used the Duck brake. This used two rubber rollers to grip the tire.

Many bikes use rim brakes. These use pads to rub the metal rim of the wheel. The pads can be made of rubber, cork, or leather. Rim brakes are light and easy to fix. However, they work poorly when the rims are wet. They can also get clogged with mud.

Another type is the coaster brake. This is found inside the rear wheel hub. You use it by pedaling backward. This type does not wear out the tire. Some bikes use disc brakes too. These work well even in wet weather.
