A shifter helps you change your bike gears.

It lets you pick the right gear ratio. This is the way the bike gears work. To change gears, you move a cable. This cable connects the shifter to the gear parts.

Shifters can be in different places. Old shifters sat on the down tube of the frame. Now, most shifters sit on the handlebars. This makes them easy to reach. There are many ways to use them. A grip shifter is a wheel. You turn it to change gears. A trigger shifter uses a lever. You push or pull the lever.

Some road bikes use a brifter. This is a part that joins the shifter and brake levers. In 1990, Shimano made the first STI system. This system put shifting and brakes together. Campagnolo made a system like this soon after. SRAM made the Double Tap in 2005. These parts help you ride your bike well.
