Shifter (bicycle part)

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A bicycle shifter is a very useful part. It helps you pick the right gear ratio. This means you can ride easier or faster.

Shifters control the gearing mechanisms on your bike. They can work with a derailleur mechanism. They can also work with an internal hub gear mechanism. This part is important for how a bike moves.

Changing gears is a simple thing that happens with a cable. The shifter is connected to the gear mechanism by this cable.

When you move the shifter, it moves the cable. This movement tells the gears to change. The cable pulls or pushes to make the switch. It is a direct link between your hand and the gears. This way, you can change how hard it is to pedal.

People have used different kinds of shifters for a long time. In the past, shifters were often on the down tube. This is a part of the bike frame. Some were also mounted on the stem.

Modern bikes often put them on the handlebars. This makes them easier and more comfortable to reach. It is a better way for riders to use them. Moving them to the bars helps with ergonomics.

There are several ways to operate these parts. A grip shifter uses a wheel that you turn. You turn it until you reach the gear you want. A trigger shifter uses a lever that you push or pull.

Some road bikes use a brifter. This is a part that joins the shifter with the brake levers. In 1990, Shimano made the STI system. This was the first to join shifting with brake levers. Campagnolo made the ErgoPower system soon after. SRAM made the Double Tap in 2005.

You can think of a shifter like a remote control. It sends a signal through a cable to change things.

Just like a remote changes a TV channel, a shifter changes a gear. This lets you adjust your bike to fit the road. You can ride up hills or on flat paths. It makes riding much more fun. Knowing how they work helps you ride better.
