Steering is the way we control the direction of something in motion.

It is a vital part of how many different machines work. Airplanes use parts called ailerons or spoilers to bank into a turn.

Boats and large hovercraft often use a rudder to change direction. Helicopters use a special method called cyclic control to change the thrust of their rotors. Even missiles and jet packs use steering to stay on their paths. Every machine needs a way to decide where it goes next.

In a car, steering works through a series of connected parts. A driver turns a steering wheel, which is attached to a steering column.

This column is linked to rods, pivots, and gears. Many modern cars use a rack and pinion system. In this setup, the steering wheel turns a small gear called a pinion. This pinion moves a long bar called a rack back and forth. This movement is then sent to the wheels through tie rods and a steering knuckle.

Engineers have spent a long time improving how these systems work. BMW was one of the first makers to use rack and pinion steering in the 1930s. Many other European car makers followed them soon after. In the United States, the 1974 Ford Pinto was one of the first to use it. Arthur Ernest Bishop invented a special variable rack in the 1970s. This invention helped cars respond better and made steering more comfortable at high speeds. He also found a way to make the gear teeth using a low cost press forging process.

Different types of vehicles require different kinds of strength and control. Heavy vehicles like trucks often use a recirculating ball system. This system uses large ball bearings between a screw and a nut to reduce friction. This gives the driver more mechanical advantage to move heavy parts.

Some vehicles, like tanks or bulldozers, use differential steering. This means the tracks move at different speeds or in opposite directions. Other cars use power steering to help the driver. This can be a hydraulic pump or an electric motor.

Steering technology also helps cars handle different speeds safely. Some cars have speed-sensitive steering to make driving easier. The Citroën SM was the first car with this in 1970. At low speeds, the steering is very easy to help with parking. At high speeds, the steering becomes firmer to keep the car stable. Some modern cars even use four-wheel steering. This means the rear wheels turn along with the front wheels. This can help a car turn in a tighter circle or stay steady on a highway.
