Bicycle gearing

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bicycle gearing is a very important part of how a bike works. It controls the link between your cadence and the wheel. Cadence is simply the rate at which you pedal your bike.

Most modern bicycles have many different gears to help you ride. You can pick a gear that fits your current situation. A low gear is great for climbing up a steep hill. A high gear is best for going fast on flat ground.

This helps you stay efficient and comfortable while you ride.

Different gears change how much force your legs must use. In a low gear, you have a large mechanical advantage. This means you pedal at a fast cadence but use less force. In a high gear, you have a smaller mechanical advantage. You can go much faster, but you must push much harder.

Using too much force in a high gear can hurt your knees. It is also important to keep a steady pedalling speed. If you pedal too fast, like above 100 rpm, it becomes less effective.

This is why shifting is such a helpful tool.

People use several different ways to measure these gear ratios. One method is called gear inches, which uses the wheel diameter. Another way is metres of development, or roll-out. This tells you the distance the bike moves for one pedal turn.

You can also use the gain ratio to measure gears. This method is special because it includes the length of the crankarm. Some people just count the teeth on the front chainring and the rear sprocket. These two numbers are often written as a fraction, like 53/19.

There are many types of bicycles with different gear setups. Single-speed bicycles only have one gear ratio and no way to shift.

You can find these on BMX bikes or track racing bikes. Some bikes use a derailleur to move the chain between gears. Other bikes use internal planetary gears inside the hub.

A shaft-driven bike uses bevel gears at each end of the shaft. Even racing bikes have specific gear needs to help them win. Racing bikes might use a low gear of around 45 gear inches.

Understanding gears helps you choose the right bike for your needs. Most manufacturers pick gears that work well for most people. However, you can swap out parts like chainrings to fine-tune your ride.

This is helpful if you carry heavy loads or ride many hills. You might also notice that gear changes feel different depending on the bike. A small change in teeth can feel very similar on different gears.

This is because cyclists care about the relative difference between gears. Learning about gearing makes you a much better rider.
