A tandem bicycle is a special bike made for more than one person.

The name tandem tells us how the riders sit. They sit one behind the other instead of side by side.

Some people call these bikes "Daisy Bells." This comes from a famous song written in 1892 by Harry Dacre. The song mentions a "bicycle built for two."

Tandems are great because they allow people to travel together at the same speed. They can even be used by people with different abilities to tour together.

On most tandems, the riders have specific jobs to do. The person in the front is called the captain, pilot, or steersman. This rider steers the bike and also pedals.

The person in the back is called the stoker, navigator, or rear admiral. This rider only focuses on pedaling. To help them work together, a timing chain links the two sets of pedals. This mechanical link ensures that both sets of pedals turn at the same rate. This way, the riders stay in sync while they move.

People have been making patents for these bikes since the mid-1880s.

In 1898, Mikael Pedersen made a two-rider version of his own bicycle. It weighed 24 pounds. He also made a four-rider version called a quad that weighed 64 pounds. These bikes were even used in the Second Anglo-Boer War. After World War II, tandem popularity went down for a while. However, a new interest in them started again in the late 1960s. In 1971, a group called The Tandem Club was started in the UK.

There are many different kinds of tandem bikes today.

A bike for three riders is a triplet. A bike for four is a quad, and a bike for five is a quint. Some tandems are built for racing or for long trips.

Some models even have three wheels, which are called tandem tricycles. There are also recumbent tandems where riders sit in a leaning back position. Some special designs allow the riders to pedal at different speeds. For example, the DaVinci design lets riders coast independently.

Because they carry more people, tandems need to be very strong.

They have more weight and extra stress on the parts. This means they often use sturdier rims and more spokes in the wheels.

The forks and brakes must also be built to handle more force. On flat ground, tandems can actually go faster than single bikes. This is because two people provide more pedaling power.

Even though they can be harder to climb hills on, they are a wonderful way to share a ride.
