technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A tricycle, often called a trike, is a vehicle with three wheels.

People use many ways to power them. Some use their legs to pedal. Others use hand cranks or even motors.

There are different ways these wheels are set up. A delta layout has one wheel in the front and two in the back.

Some riders use a recumbent design. This means they sit in a chair-like seat very low to the ground.

Sitting low creates a low center of gravity. This helps the trike stay stable and move through the air easily.

People have been making three-wheeled vehicles for a long time. In 1655 or 1680, a German man named Stephan Farffler built a three-wheeled wheelchair.

He used hand cranks so he could move around. In 1789, two French inventors made a pedal-powered version. They called it a tricycle.

These riders use their arms to move. Some even use electrical pulses to help their leg muscles work while they crank. This helps them go much faster and further.

If you have ever ridden a bicycle, you might find a trike different. A regular bike only has two wheels, so you must balance.

A trike stays upright on its own. This makes it a great choice for children or senior adults.

However, you must still be careful when turning fast. If you turn too sharply, the trike might tip over. Riders can help by leaning their bodies into the turn to stay steady.
