Many people around the world call them "tuk tuks." These vehicles are very helpful for traveling in many different countries. They are popular in places with tropical or subtropical weather. This is because they are usually not fully enclosed by walls. They are also inexpensive to own and operate. This makes them a great choice for many people.

Most passenger models have a specific way they work. They feature a metal body that rests on three wheels. A soft canvas roof often covers the top. The driver sits in a small cabin at the very front. They use handlebar controls to steer the vehicle. Passengers sit in the back area. This space can hold up to three people.

Some versions are built differently to carry cargo instead. Other simple models use a sidecar attached to a motorcycle.

The history of these vehicles began many years ago. In the 1930s, Japan encouraged making small three-wheeled vehicles. The Mazda-Go, released in 1931, is often seen as the first auto rickshaw.

Later, the Japanese government sent 20,000 used three-wheelers to Southeast Asia. In 1947, an Italian designer named Corradino D'Ascanio helped create the Piaggio Ape. This was part of helping Italy rebuild after the war.
