Mountain bike

A mountain bike is a special kind of bicycle. It is built for riding off-road on rough paths. These paths often have rocks, roots, and loose dirt.

Some trails even have technical features like log piles or rock gardens. Because the ground is so bumpy, these bikes are often heavier than road bikes. They use wide, knobby tires to grip the dirt. They also have wide handlebars to help the rider stay balanced. These features make the bike great for mountain trails or fire roads.

Many mountain bikes use suspension to handle bumps. Suspension is a way for the bike to move up and down. This helps absorb the force when a tire hits an obstacle.

A "hardtail" bike has a suspension fork on the front wheel only. A "full suspension" bike has shock absorbers on both the front and rear wheels. This dual suspension helps the bike keep its speed. Without it, the bike might bounce upward and lose forward energy. Full suspension bikes are often faster on very technical or rough sections.

Stopping is very important on steep hills. Most modern mountain bikes use disc brakes.

These brakes sit in the center of the wheel on the hub. This helps them stay dry and clean even in mud. There are two main types of disc brakes. Mechanical brakes use a cable to pull the brake pads. Hydraulic brakes use a sealed system filled with liquid. This liquid is pushed by the rider to move the pads. Hydraulic systems usually give stronger and more consistent stopping power.

Mountain biking began as a small sport in the 1970s. In Northern California, riders used old, heavy bicycles to go down hills.

People called these modified bikes "ballooners," "klunkers," or "dirt bombers." Joe Breeze was a frame builder who developed the first real mountain bike. Later, companies began making them with high-tech materials. The first production mountain bike was the 1979 Lawwill Pro Cruiser. In 1981, the Specialized Stumpjumper became the first mass-produced model. Today, mountain biking is a huge, mainstream activity with world championships.

Bikes can be used in many different ways. Some people ride them on paved streets for a stable, upright ride.

Others use them for racing on dirt tracks. There are many subtypes of the sport, like cross-country or downhill racing. Even city riders and couriers use them to go over curbs and potholes. Modern bikes can have up to 13 speeds to help with climbing. Some new designs use a "1x" system. This means there is only one chainring in the front to make shifting simpler.
