It usually has a distinct summit at the top. Most people think of hills as being smaller than mountains. They are often less tall and less steep.

However, the line between a hill and a mountain is not always clear. It can be quite subjective. In Scotland, people often call big mountains "hills."

For example, they use names like the Cuillin Hills for mountain areas. In Wales, the names depend more on how the land looks.

This shows that how we name things can change based on where we live.

Nature has many ways to create these landforms.

Sometimes, hills form when the earth cracks or shifts, which is called faulting. Other times, they come from the erosion of much larger mountains. Wind and water can wear down rock until a hill remains. Glaciers can also move dirt to build hills. One type is a drumlin, which is a hill shaped like a whale.

Another kind is a pingo, which is a mound of earth with ice inside.

Even the soil itself moves slowly downhill. This slow movement is called downhill creep and helps make peaks look rounded.

People have used hills for many important reasons throughout history.

Many old settlements were built on high ground to avoid floods. Being on a hill also helped people defend their homes. It is easier to see enemies coming from a high spot. It is also hard for attackers to fight while moving uphill.

These hills show how people lived in the same places for many generations.

Because hills offer a great view, they have been important in many battles.

Controlling the high ground gives an army a better place to fire. It also lets soldiers hide behind the crest of the hill. The Battle of Alesia happened in 52 BC. The Battle of Mons Graupius in AD 83 was the first recorded conflict in Scotland. In 1775, the Battle of Bunker Hill took place in America.

During the American Civil War in 1863, battles happened at Cemetery Hill. Later, the Battle of San Juan Hill occurred in 1898. These events show how much the shape of the land matters in war.

Today, hills are still a big part of how we live and play.

Many people enjoy hillwalking, which is a type of hiking. In Britain, people often try to climb hills on special lists. They might try "Munro bagging" to climb every hill on a list. Some people even have fun races on hills. In England, people roll wheels of cheese down hills at Cooper's Hill.

Others use hills for sports like golf or cross-country running. Whether they are natural or man-made, hills are a constant part of our world.
