Landforms are the different shapes found on the surface of a planet.

These features make up the terrain of a place. The way these shapes are arranged is called topography. Some landforms happen naturally in the wild. Other landforms are anthropogenic, which means they are caused by people. Landforms can be found on Earth or on other planets in space.

Many things work together to create these shapes. Tectonic plate movements under the crust can push land up into mountains. Other shapes come from erosion or deposition. Even living things can change the land. For example, corals and algae help build coral reefs.

Plants like vegetation can also help shape sand dunes. These different forces change how the surface looks over time.

Scientists use a special name for the study of landforms. They call this study geomorphology. They look at things like elevation and slope to understand them. They also look at the type of soil or rock. Experts use many tools to map these shapes. They use contour lines or digital models to show the land.

This helps them see the height of hills and valleys.

There are many different sizes of landforms. The biggest ones are continents and oceans. Below those are hills, mountains, plains, and plateaus. You can also find smaller things like valleys or canyons. Some features are even hidden deep under the ocean. These include mid-ocean ridges and large oceanic basins.

Every landform has its own unique physical features.

You can see landforms in many places around the world. Some are very large and some are quite small. A plateau might span hundreds of kilometers. A single hill might only be a few hundred meters wide. We can even see these shapes on terrestrial planets in space. They have mountains, valleys, and polar caps just like Earth.
