Landform

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A landform is a physical feature on the solid surface of a planet. These features exist on Earth and on other planetary bodies in the universe. Landforms can be natural or anthropogenic, which means they are caused or influenced by human activity. When many landforms exist together, they create a specific terrain. The specific arrangement of these landforms across a landscape is called topography.

Scientists study these features through a field called geomorphology. To understand a landform, experts look at its physical attributes. These attributes include elevation, which is height, and slope, which is the steepness of the land. They also examine orientation, structure stratification, rock exposure, and the specific soil type. These details help define the shape and character of the terrain.

Many different processes work to create and change landforms over time. Tectonic plate movements occur under the Earth's crust. These movements can push the ground upward to create hills and mountains. Erosion and deposition also play major roles in shaping the surface. Biological factors can influence the land as well. For example, vegetation helps develop dune systems and salt marshes. In the ocean, corals and algae work to form coral reefs.

Landforms exist in a clear hierarchy of different orders. The highest-order landforms are continents and oceans. The second order includes major features like hills, mountains, plains, and plateaus. The third order consists of smaller features like lakes, mountain peaks, sand dunes, valleys, and waterfalls. Landform elements are smaller parts of these higher-order structures. These elements include specific parts like hill-tops, shoulders, saddles, foreslopes, and backslopes.

Scale is a very important concept when identifying landforms. The spatial distribution of these features is often scale-dependent. This means a landform might look different depending on how closely you observe it. For instance, a plateau or a hill can range from a few hundred meters to hundreds of kilometers in size. Geologists also look at elementary landforms, which are the smallest homogeneous divisions of a surface. These are areas with similar morphometric properties bounded by lines of discontinuity.

There are many specific types of landforms to recognize. Major types include hills, mountains, plains, and plateaus. Minor landforms include features like basins, buttes, canyons, and valleys. Some features are found on land, while others are submerged under the ocean. Submerged features include mid-ocean ridges, volcanoes, and great oceanic basins. When scientists describe relief that is underwater, they use the term bathymetry.

Modern technology has changed how we map the Earth's surface. Scientists use digital elevation models, or DEMs, to extract landform data. This data is gathered using modern satellites and stereoscopic aerial surveillance cameras. In the past, compiling this data required many expensive man-hours. Today, the most detailed DEMs are measured directly using LIDAR techniques. This allows for much more precise mapping of the world's topography.
