Highlands are areas with high elevation. This means they sit high above the land around them. They can be big hills or low mountains. Some people use the word upland for hills. Most people use the word highland for low mountains. The two words can be used for both. They often describe land that is between hills and mountains.

These lands work in many different ways. In Afghanistan, the highlands are between 2,000 and 3,000 meters high. The winters there are very cold. The summers are short and cool. Many small streams and rivers water the mountain pastures. In the summer, animals eat grass in these high pastures. In the winter, they move to the warm lowlands. This seasonal move is called transhumance.

Highlands are not just on Earth. Other planets have highland continents called terrae. These are areas with high peaks and deep valleys. They are made of unstable ground. You can find them on Mercury and Venus. They are also on Mars and the Moon. They look a lot like the highlands we see on our own world.
