As the land gets higher, you find mixed woods. These have both spruce and beech trees. The highest spots have thick spruce woods. These forests are very wet and humid. You will see lots of moss and lichens there.

Some areas are even marshy with peat moss. These are called raised bogs. In these wet spots, you might find low bushes. The plants change based on how much light they get.

Water is a very important part of this region. It rains a lot in the Harz mountains.

Because of this, many rivers flow through the land. There are 17 dams built to hold this water. The Oker Dam and Rappbode Dam are the largest. These dams create big reservoirs and lakes.

People use the water to make electricity. It also provides drinking water for many people. The dams help stop flooding during heavy rain. This water power has been used since early times.

The rocks in the Harz have a long history. The mountains began to form millions of years ago.

This happened during the Palaeozoic era. Long ago, these were even taller mountains. Over time, wind and water wore them down. Later, the land was pushed up again. This created the mountains we see today. The rocks change very quickly in small areas. Because of this, scientists call it a "Classic Geological Square Mile."

Today, about 600,000 people live in the Harz. They live in many small towns and villages.
