It sits near four other German states: Brandenburg, Saxony, Thuringia, and Lower Saxony. The state covers a large area with about 2.17 million people living there. The landscape changes a lot depending on where you stand. In the north, the land is very flat and wide. This area is part of the North German Plain. You can find old towns like Stendal and Tangermünde in the north. Moving toward the south, the ground rises into the Harz mountains.

The highest point is the Brocken mountain. It stands 1,141 meters tall, making it the highest peak in northern Germany. Other areas like the Magdeburg Börde have very fertile soil for growing things.

The history of this place is quite interesting and changed many times. Saxony-Anhalt was first formed in July 1945 after World War II ended. It was made by joining the Prussian Province of Saxony and the Free State of Anhalt. Later, it became part of the German Democratic Republic in 1949. For a while, the state was even broken up into smaller districts.

Everything changed again in 1990 during German reunification. This brought the state back to life as part of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Many important towns and industries make the state busy. Magdeburg is the largest city and serves as the capital. Halle is the second largest city and has a big university.

It is well known for its connection to Martin Luther.

Today, the state is working hard to grow its economy. After the old industries changed in the 1990s, things were difficult for a while. In the year 2000, the state had a very high number of people without jobs. However, since then, many new businesses have started. Big investments were made to build modern paths and buildings. Now, the businesses in Saxony-Anhalt are very competitive in the world. The state continues to be an important part of Germany.
