People often call the whole region Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland. The highest point is the Großer Zschirnstein, which is 562 meters high. To the east, the land turns into the Lusatian Highlands. To the west, it meets the Ore Mountains.

The landscape was shaped by many things over a long time. The area is made mostly of sandstone. Long ago, the Elbe River flowed at a lower level.

As the nearby mountains rose up, the sandstone plate cracked. Water from the river and side valleys flowed through these cracks. This water wore away the stone in many places. Some rocks stayed as large, flat hills like the Lilienstein.

Other rocks broke into long ridges or thin pillars.

People have lived in this area for many centuries. In the early Middle Ages, Slavic tribes lived here. These groups were the Nisane, the Milzane, and the Dacine. Later, the area became part of the Margraviate of Meissen in the 1400s. In the 1700s, two artists from Switzerland named Adrian Zingg and Anton Graff visited. They thought the hills looked like their home in the Swiss Jura.

Because of them, the name "Saxon Switzerland" became very popular.

Today, many people visit the area for fun and adventure. In 1990, a national park was created to protect the land.

Rock climbers are very active here. There are over 1,100 rock towers and 14,000 climbing routes. Climbers follow special rules called the Saxon Rules. They use nylon slings instead of metal tools for safety. Some people even practice "boofen," which means sleeping under rock overhangs.
