Alpine tundra is a special type of land found on high mountains.

It is a place where trees cannot grow. This happens because the climate is very harsh and cold. The high elevation creates a difficult environment for large plants. As you climb higher, you reach a line called the tree line.

Below this line, you might see stunted forests known as krummholz. Above the line, the land becomes the alpine tundra. This region ends when you reach the snow line where ice stays all summer.

There is a specific way the weather works in these high places. As air rises up a mountain, it expands and becomes colder. This process is known as adiabatic cooling. Because of this, moving up a mountain is like moving toward the North or South Pole.

The growing season is also very short, lasting only 45 to 90 days. Temperatures often drop below freezing even during the summer months. Most of the water comes from winter snow. However, high winds can blow the snow away from some rocky ridges.

Scientists have worked for a long time to understand this climate.

A scientist named Wladimir Köppen found a link between tree lines and temperature. He showed that forests cannot grow if the warmest month stays below 10 degrees Celsius. Another thinker, Otto Nordenskjöld, created a formula to look at winter conditions too. Later, in 1947, a man named Holdridge improved these ideas. He used a measurement called biotemperature to define the alpine climate. These studies help us map where these special lands exist.

Alpine tundra is found all over our world.

You can find it in the North American Cordillera and the Appalachian Mountains. It also covers parts of the Alps and Pyrenees in Europe. Other large areas are in the Himalaya and Karakoram of Asia. You can even find it in the Andes of South America and the Snowy Mountains of Australia. These places have rocky peaks, cliffs, and steep slopes. Some parts are even flat or have rolling hills.

Plants and animals have found clever ways to live here.

Many plants are cushion plants that grow in low clumps to hide from the wind. Some have thick hairs on their leaves for protection.

Animals like the mountain goat, pika, and snow leopard live in these rugged spots. Because these mountains are so far apart, different animals live in different regions. There is no single animal that lives in every alpine tundra. Each mountain home is a unique and beautiful place.
