The ground here is made of a hard rock called granite.

This granite formed about 309 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. It was pushed deep underground into other rocks. Over a long time, the top of this granite mass moved closer to the surface. This created many granite hilltops called tors. These tors often look like large, rounded boulders sitting on the hills.

The high ground acts as a catchment area for many rivers in Devon. The River Dart actually gives the moor its name. It starts as the East Dart and West Dart before becoming one river. Because it rains so much, the ground stays very wet. Much of the land is covered in thick layers of peat. This peat is made of decaying plants that soak up the rain.

It has special habitats like blanket bogs and old oak woodlands. Some of these woods, like Wistman's Wood, are very old. You can find many types of moss and lichen growing on the rocks and trees. Many animals live here, including otters and many types of bats. There are also many birds, such as the cuckoo and the skylark. Even rare insects like the southern damselfly live in the wet areas.

People have a long history of using this land in different ways.

Some parts of the moor have been used as military firing ranges for over 200 years. However, the public still has many rights to walk across the land. There is even a famous walking event called the Ten Tors Challenge. In this event, about 2,400 young people walk long distances between ten different tors. It is a place where history, nature, and people all meet.
