Gear

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A gear is a special kind of wheel used in machines. It is often called a toothed wheel because it has bumps called teeth around its edge.

These teeth lock into the teeth of another gear to pass movement along. This movement is known as rotational motion.

When you connect two or more gears together, it is called a gear train. Gears are very important because they help machines do hard jobs. They can change the speed of a spin or the strength of a turn.

There are many ways gears work to change motion. A gear can trade speed for torque, which is the power used to turn something.

If a small gear drives a larger gear, the speed goes down but the torque goes up. This makes the machine stronger. The opposite happens if a large gear drives a small one. The smaller member of a pair is often called a pinion.

Gears can also change the direction of a spin. Sometimes they can even change the axis of rotation. A straight bar with teeth called a rack can turn this spinning motion into a straight line.

People have used gears for a very long time. The oldest working gears are actually found in nature on the legs of an insect called Issus coleoptratus.

The earliest man-made gears found date back to 4th century BC China. In Europe, the famous Antikythera mechanism was used to track the sun and moon.

This device was built between 150 and 100 BC. Other early gears were used in water clocks in China by the year 725. In the 14th century, Giovanni Dondi dell'Orologio built a complex clock called the Astrarium.

Gears can be made from many different materials. Most modern gears are made of metals like steel or aluminum.

Steel is very popular because it is strong and does not cost too much. Some gears are made of plastic because they are cheap and do not need oil.

In the past, huge gears for flour mills were often made of wood. These were called cogwheels and used wooden pegs called cogs.

Today, gears can be tiny, just a few micrometers wide for small machines. They can also be huge, over 10 metres wide for mining equipment.

You can see gears working in many things you know. Most cars have a gearbox to help the wheels turn.

This allows the driver to change the power without changing the engine speed. You can also find gears in small watches or even in toys.

Some gears are even designed to move in uneven ways, like the Geneva drive.
