A nut is a small but vital tool used to hold things together.

It is a fastener with a threaded hole inside. Most nuts work with a partner called a bolt. When you screw a nut onto a bolt, they stay tight through friction. This happens because the threads rub against each other. The bolt also stretches just a tiny bit to help. This process squeezes the parts together so they do not move.

Making a nut follows a specific way of working. First, workers pick a material like steel, brass, or stainless steel. They heat the metal to make it soft and easy to shape. This is called being malleable. Then, they use forging to create the basic shape. Next, machines cut the threads into the hole. Finally, the nut might get a special coating or heat treatment. This makes the nut stronger or helps it resist rust.

In the past, nuts and bolts were very different. Each nut was handmade to fit only one specific bolt. This meant you could not swap them if one broke. Joseph Whitworth suggested using standard sizes in 1841. This idea became very important in 1851 in London, England. A huge building called the Crystal Palace was built in Hyde Park. The firm Fox Henderson used standardized nuts and bolts for the job. This allowed them to finish the building in only 190 days.

Today, most nuts have six sides. This shape is called a hexagon.

A hexagon is great because it lets a tool grip easily from different angles. It also works well in tight spaces. If a nut had too many sides, the corners might break or round off. Some nuts are even more special. Wingnuts have large wings so you can turn them with your fingers.

Other types, called locknuts, use special parts to stop the nut from shaking loose.

Nuts come in many different forms for different jobs. For example, a cage nut is held in a spring steel cage.

A nylon-insert nut, or Nyloc, uses a plastic ring to stay tight. Some nuts are made of brass for plumbing or electrical work. Steel nuts are very strong for big construction projects. You might even see a star nut inside a bicycle frame.
