A nut is a small part with a threaded hole.

Threads are the ridges inside the hole. Nuts usually work with a bolt. The bolt and nut stay tight using friction. Friction is a force that stops things from sliding.

Most nuts have six sides. This shape is called hexagonal. A hexagonal shape lets tools grip the nut well. It also works in tight spots. Square nuts were used first. They are harder to make by hand. Today, we use standard sizes. This means one nut can fit many bolts. This was very important for the Crystal Palace. That big building was built in London in 1851. Workers used standard nuts to finish it in 190 days.

Some nuts have special jobs. Wingnuts have wings for your fingers. You can turn them without tools. Other nuts are called locknuts. These help stop the nut from shaking loose.

Different metals are used too. Steel is strong for building. Brass is good for water pipes. Stainless steel does not rust easily.
